The Story behind the Silent (or not so Silent) L"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>|\u02c8s\u0252ld\u0259(r)| and |\u02c8s\u0259\u028ad\u0259(r)|<\/p>\n<p>The word <a title=\"Solder\" href=\"\/solder\" target=\"_blank\">solder<\/a> originates in Middle English. The Latin origin is the word <em>solidaire<\/em>, meaning to &#8220;to make solid,&#8221; which is where the <em>-l-<\/em> in solder comes from.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solidaire (v.)<\/strong> \u2013 to join, be united, standing together, or interdependent.<\/p>\n<p>The word more immediately comes from the Anglo-French word <em>soudure<\/em>. This Anglo French word is similar to the contemporary French verb <em>souder<\/em>. The word eventually evolved in English to its current spelling.<\/p>\n<p>The modern form of the word solder in English is a re-Latinization from the early 15th century. The <em>-l-<\/em> was dropped on the way to Old French, which was common (for example, <em>pulverem<\/em> to <em>poudre<\/em>, <em>collum<\/em> to <em>cou<\/em>, <em>calidus<\/em> to <em>chaud<\/em>, etc.). Note that the <em>-l-<\/em> in solder is typically sounded in British English.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly enough, the English translation of the French word <em>soudure<\/em> refers to welding, not soldering. The word for soldering in French, <em>soudage<\/em>, is similar and shares a common root.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Souder [soo-deh] (v.)<\/strong> \u2013 to solder or to weld.<\/p>\n<p><em>Avec le fil a souder<\/em>, which literally means with the line of solder, applies to <a title=\"Soldering equipment\" href=\"\/soldering-equipment\" target=\"_blank\">soldering<\/a> whereas <em>soudre a l\u2019arc<\/em> refers to arc welding. Isn&#8217;t everything a little more elegant in Latin languages? This is yet another example of a simple yet beautiful group of shared words. Why have two distinct words, weld and solder, for processes that are so similar? Almost as logical as the Standard system of measurement where lbs refers to pounds and oz refers to ounces.<\/p>\n<p>Anyhow, next time you are wondering why there is a silent <em>-l-<\/em> in solder \u2014 or not silent if you live in England \u2014 you can recall this bit of knowledge and clue in your EE classmates [\u2026who will turn to you and say, &#8220;Hey, Chomsky, the Linguistics building is thataway&#8221; &#8211; <em>Ed.<\/em>].<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>|\u02c8s\u0252ld\u0259(r)| and |\u02c8s\u0259\u028ad\u0259(r)| The word solder originates in Middle English.
