{"id":1836,"date":"2017-11-10T09:15:22","date_gmt":"2017-11-10T16:15:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/?p=1836"},"modified":"2017-12-05T12:56:19","modified_gmt":"2017-12-05T19:56:19","slug":"arduino-prototyping-countdown-timer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/arduino-prototyping-countdown-timer\/","title":{"rendered":"Arduino prototyping: Countdown timer display on a powered breadboard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Arduino prototyping can be daunting if you&#8217;re new to electronics or programming.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t have to be though and in this simple project we built a seven segment display countdown timer using an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/arduino_uno_r3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arduino Uno<\/a>\u00a0R3, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/sc03-12ewa.html\">seven segment common cathode display<\/a>, our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/pbb-272a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">powered breadboard<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/ra220\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">220\u00a0ohm resistor<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/bbj-65\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wire jumpers<\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0 This is a great project for learning more about Arduino prototyping if you&#8217;re new to using one and want to get some\u00a0hands-on practice.\u00a0 We would rate this project as easy with little or no electronics or programming background required.\u00a0 We used the Arduino code provided in the Instructable <a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/www.instructables.com\/id\/Seven-Segment-Display-Tutorial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seven Segment Display Tutorial<\/a>\u00a0in order to perform the countdown.\u00a0 You could easily extend this project to other needs and further arduino prototyping of other types of timers and circuits.<\/p>\n<p>In order to complete this project as we did you&#8217;ll need to perform the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Connect segments A-G to digital output pins 2-8 on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/arduino_uno_r3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arduino Uno<\/a>\u00a0respectively (segment A to pin 2, segment B to pin 3, etc). \u00a0You can determine which line segment corresponds to which pin using our pin out diagram on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/content\/52082\/SC03-12EWA.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">seven segment display spec sheet<\/a> (or by supplying 5V to test each segment and using the guide below). \u00a0You will also connect pin Dp on the display to digital out 9.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1846 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/seven-segment.png\" alt=\"arduino prototyping seven segment\" width=\"220\" height=\"220\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Next you will connect the two common grounds on the cathode display to the 220 ohm resistor then connect that resistor to ground on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/pbb-272a\">powered breadboard<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Once it is all wired you will upload the code below to your\u00a0Arduino Uno Board and then set your powered breadboard to 5V and power tie the breadboard into the 5V and ground terminals of the Arduino Uno.
