Electronic deadbolt with a servo motor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We recently added<a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/servo-motors\" target=\"_blank\"> servo motors<\/a>\u00a0in a variety of sizes and torques to our product listings. \u00a0Servo motors are dc motors with integrated encoders that can rotate to specific locations. \u00a0They are commonly used in robotics, tracking systems, cutting &amp; forming machines, and\u00a0automatic door openers. \u00a0The advantage of a servo motor over a stepper motor or dc motor is that they provide feedback so they can return to specific locations with great accuracy. \u00a0The servo motors we offer can rotate between 0-180 degrees.<\/p>\n<p>After doing some market research, we realized that low cost, high functioning electronic servo locks were\u00a0scarce. \u00a0 This motivated us to build our own electronic deadbolt that would be secure and easy for someone with basic knowledge of electronics to build. \u00a0Not only is this project one you could use at home but it is a good way to learn more about motors, RF communication, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/arduino-compatible-boards\" target=\"_blank\">Arduino<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/deadbolt.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1982\" src=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/deadbolt.jpg\" alt=\"deadbolt\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The original deadbolt we would replace with an electronic lock.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_81251.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1970\" src=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_81251.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8125\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After removing the faceplates of the deadbolt we see the hardware that holds the door latch. \u00a0We will reuse this.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_81271.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1971\" src=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_81271.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8127\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The external lock is mounted to a flat shaft that locks and unlocks the deadbolt\u00a0when rotated. \u00a0This shaft must be shaved down or cut to fit the new depth of the servo motor.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_81301.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1972\" src=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_81301.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8130\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We use an MG959 servo motor mounted to 2 servo mounts, using rivets supplied with the servo mount to clamp them together.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_81331.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1973\" src=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_81331.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8133\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We found some scrap sheet metal for mounting the servo motor to the door, we purchased a plastic round to rectangular adapter from Ace Hardware to adapt the motor shaft to the rectangular cantilever on the door deadbolt.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_81352.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1975\" src=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_81352.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8135\" motor, wire it to a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/solderless-breadboards\" target=\"_blank\"> breadboard <\/a>and OSEPP Uno Plus\u00a0on the left side of the door.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_8220.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1978\" src=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_8220.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8220\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We use a 5V switching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/power-supplies-2\" target=\"_blank\">power supply<\/a> to convert 120V electrical load into usable 5V by the motor and Arduino.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_82302.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1979\" src=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_82302.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8230\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The OSEPP Arduino compatible UNO R3
