It is therefore extremely difficult to maintain a\u00a0complete line of battery charging solutions to keep batteries at the most efficient\u00a0charge levels.<\/p>\n<h5>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/3663a.html\">Array 366X<\/a> series of programmable power supplies can\u00a0easily accommodate the varied battery charging characteristics by\u00a0programming it for various complex modes of operation.<\/h5>\n<p>After determining the proper charge algorithm for the battery chemistry in use,\u00a0a simple <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mathworks.com\/products\/matlab\/\">Mat Lab<\/a> program was written for each of the battery types. This\u00a0now eliminates the need to procure and maintain multiple battery chargers\u00a0and keep track of which charger is required for the different batteries being\u00a0used. The various charging requirements will now be listed and the\u00a0corresponding program described.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2717 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/dc-electronic-load.jpg\" alt=\"Battery Charging with the Array 3363a Programmable Power Supply\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/dc-electronic-load.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/dc-electronic-load-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/dc-electronic-load-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lithium Ion batteries<\/strong> are quickly becoming the most popular battery type due\u00a0to the large energy density capacity, but&#8230;.the charging algorithm is the most\u00a0complex and is extremely critical from a safety standpoint. Incorrect\u00a0charging could potentially result in the release of harmful gasses and could\u00a0even result in spontaneous combustion of the cells.<\/p>\n<p>The discharged battery must start off being charged in CC (constant current)\u00a0mode at a rate equal to one half the mAhr current rating of the battery. The\u00a0voltage of the battery is monitored and the power supply mode of operation\u00a0is switched to CV (constant voltage) mode when the battery voltage reaches\u00a0the full charge voltage of 4.2 volts per cell.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, the supply current is\u00a0monitored and the charge is terminated when the current supplied is less\u00a0than 10% of the initial charge current.<\/p>\n<h4>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Charging-MatLab.txt\">attached Mat Lab program<\/a> was written for a dual cell Lithium Ion battery\u00a0pack rated at 7.4 Volts and 4500mAhr.<\/h4>\n<p>Therefore the initial power supply\u00a0settings are CC mode, 9.0 volts, and 2 Amps.\u00a0The CC mode at 2 Amps is\u00a0maintained until the battery voltage reaches 8.4 volts at which time the\u00a0operating mode is switched to CV (constant voltage).<\/p>\n<p>The charging is now\u00a0continued at this rate and is maintained until the supply current drops to 0.2\u00a0Amps. At this point the battery is considered fully charged and the output of\u00a0the power supply is switched off.<\/p>\n<p>Although this example was written for Li Ion batteries, it is a simple matter to\u00a0modify the program to accommodate any other battery type such as NimH,\u00a0NiCad, or lead acid.<\/p>\n<p>This technique could be used with any programmable\u00a0power supply, but the Array 366X series of programmable power supplies\u00a0was found to be an exceptional candidate for this application due to its use of\u00a0the SCPI (Standard Commands for Programmable Instruments) control\u00a0language.<\/p>\n<p>Questions, Comments, Concerns?
