After we all enjoyed a share, the Crock-Pot\u00a0that kept it warm\u00a0was left running with some dip left in it for later.<\/p>\n<h5>However, after a while the Crock-Pot began\u00a0to burn the cheese!<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2892 size-full\" title=\"Variac Crock-Pot Experiment\" src=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_1009-e1464034471464.jpg\" alt=\"Variac Crock-Pot Experiment\" width=\"750\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_1009-e1464034471464.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_1009-e1464034471464-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>After further inspection, we found that this particular Crock-Pot had no native temperature controls, so we decided we would make our own!<\/h4>\n<p>Here at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Circuit Specialists<\/a>, we are a huge proponent\u00a0of the infinitely functional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/variacs\" target=\"_blank\">variac<\/a> device. We figured this would be a perfect match for our on\/off only Crock-Pot. This SCR151-NP 1.5 quart model is rated for about 215 degrees.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2891\" src=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_1013-e1464034415846.jpg\" alt=\"Variac Crock-Pot Experiment\" width=\"750\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_1013-e1464034415846.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_1013-e1464034415846-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The theory behind this experiment is that by using a variable auto-transformer (variac), we could run the Crock-Pot at a consistent lower temperature, and not burn any of the delicious cheese dip.<\/p>\n<p>To run this experiment, we are going to use a few tools from our stash of advanced consumer electronics.<\/p>\n<p>Featured today will be the:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/variac-variable-ac-ps05kva.html\" target=\"_blank\">Variac TDGC2-0.5<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; Open box return, <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/UAlG0HWt4tw\" target=\"_blank\">Still fully functional<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/rugged-precision-mastech-ms8340a-dmm.html\" target=\"_blank\">Mastech MS8340A Multimeter<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/mooshimeter_wireless_multimeter.html\" target=\"_blank\">Mooshimeter Data-Logging Multimeter<\/a><\/p>\n<p>2x <a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/80ak-a.html\" target=\"_blank\">Thermocouple Adapters<\/a><\/p>\n<p>2x\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/csi6500-k-probe.html\" target=\"_blank\">K-Type Probes<\/a><\/p>\n<p>1.5 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.walmart.com\/ip\/Crock-Pot-SCR151-NP-1.5-Quart-Round-Slow-Cooker-Black\/21190720\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Quart Crock-Pot &#8211; SCR151-NP<\/a><\/p>\n<p>To set this up, we need to get the Crock-Pot hot enough to burn the cheese.<\/p>\n<p>We will use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/rugged-precision-mastech-ms8340a-dmm.html\" target=\"_blank\">Mastech Multimeter<\/a>, coupled with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/mooshimeter_wireless_multimeter.html\" target=\"_blank\">Mooshimeter<\/a> Data-Logging Multimeter to record and log our temperature changes. The Mastech provides a clear Fahrenheit temperature readout, but the mooshimeter responds only to voltage and does not have a true probe &#8216;temperature&#8217; reading. We are using the Mooshimeter to graph\u00a0the data to be interpreted later.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2894\" src=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_1020-e1464034652909.jpg\" alt=\"Variac Crock-Pot Experiment Mastech\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After about an hour, we reached 210 degrees Fahrenheit, which was plenty of heat to\u00a0totally toast the bottom layer. We decided to not let it cross the boiling threshold due to our lid not being completely secure with the probes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2898\" src=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_1029-e1464034787565.jpg\" alt=\"Variac Crock-Pot Experiment\" width=\"750\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_1029-e1464034787565.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_1029-e1464034787565-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2893\" src=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_1034-e1464034542396.jpg\" alt=\"Variac Crock-Pot Experiment\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now, we plugged the Crock-Pot into the variac and reduced the voltage down from the standard wall outlet voltage of 120v to the 78v mark on our variac. At this point, we wait until it starts to level out.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2899\" src=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_1038-e1464034979634.jpg\" alt=\"Variac Crock-Pot Experiment\" width=\"745\" height=\"725\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_1038-e1464034979634.jpg 745w, https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_1038-e1464034979634-300x292.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 745px) 100vw, 745px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After about 20 minutes, we were down to about 200 degrees, still declining.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2896\" src=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_1044-e1464034829463.jpg\" alt=\"Variac Crock-Pot Experiment\" width=\"750\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_1044-e1464034829463.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_1044-e1464034829463-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>About 40 minutes after that, we managed to get the temperature to level out right around 187-188 degrees Fahrenheit.
