Sine waves are waveforms that alternate in values during a cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A function generator might also be called a waveform generator or signal generator, although signal generators refer to an entire group of test equipment that generates electrical signals. A signal generator that uses integrated circuits to generate waveforms may also be called a function generator ic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a 555 Timer?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The 555 timer is an 8-pin chip. It has a peak value, which is the highest amplitude it attains, and a trough value, the lowest amplitude it obtains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/Bf4RHF9SdDBfj0fjLjeR8DzxU8gFmbbw_W8DLqf5hndig4JxNSLOnbyH9j7x6FB6tt57RjxZfTXAvQ8sFKTrkC3Kwzcpqp7SxV2mV4B9IWohqmuQYUtsJVYMl_CKbUkaIl_ScZPZAo6PUPntwJGtRziktuDiy-2FkaTJRqG3D-8qyMgf1YPxVHoWYg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sine waves are very common:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Household electricity sockets come out of AC sine voltage signals.<\/li><li>Function generators.<\/li><li>Also used a lot in acoustics.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DIY Breadboard Function Generator in 5 Steps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Parts Needed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/lm556.html\">555 Timer Chip<\/a><\/li><li>2.2K\u03a9 resistor<\/li><li>100nF ceramic capacitor<\/li><li>10nF ceramic capacitor<\/li><li>1\u03bcF ceramic capacitor<\/li><li>470\u03bcH inductor<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/powered-protoboard-system-with-two-lcd-digital-panel-meters.html\">Power Breadboard 272C<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In this circuit, we will connect the 555 timers to be in astable mode, which will produce square wave signals. Using an LC circuit, we will convert the square wave signal into a sine wave signal. The right values must be chosen for the LC resonant circuit, or else it will not work.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The sine wave generator circuit that we will build is shown below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/1Iv4Ox_NuihzHs44Hx42FQZ0f8jHH6uXDR23zSVQMgbdE1BbQ2BoNoeNbze1oyr2tmJN6HEn9djpRT5HJIBLhNbBjg9tsswwIeOxZW9nCOPf-sKQ-hhirXyvTZvSxFYo5gOx2HJbjEoSq1QqgaE4z3ukQPvEzHuLVb-HGHN3HbeJci31K808YpwNXw\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Place the 555 timers in astable mode.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The astable mode can produce digital square waveforms that go back and forth between HIGH and LOW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\"><li>Create an RC network circuit to place the 555 in astable mode.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Use the 2.2K\u03a9 resistor and a 10nF capacitor to create an RC network circuit. Refer to the function generator schematic above for placement. This will help you filter and refine your signals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"3\"><li>Connect to 4.5V power.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The power requirement of this circuit is 4.5V. This 4.5V goes to pin 8 and pin 4. Pin 1 is grounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"4\"><li>Calculate the RC network.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Use formula F= 1\/2\u03c0RC.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, our test case formula looked like this: F= 1\/2(3.14)(2.2K\u03a9)(10nF)= 7237Hz<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using this formula, we learned that the square wave signal has a frequency of approximately of 7.2KHz. However, we want this signal to turn into a sine wave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/z6yP2HzPFR7BXP0S663arJAsYX4dAoWpeVWjGUVSVnOBKfdG5tsrSmF1YvWCHBPVThXRu4yE_EbcKVKoR3oKQFconp5Vyd8YKED7aTJblshKTnR4c01TB4z7ceYnTJy8WVBDu5oXPfjvkajzWzh2Puz4ccscDEB8HxUKrq_T-MtXfEF3xpjeA0Lscw\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"5\"><li>Create a resonant LC Circuit to produce a Sine Wave.<ol><li>The formula to calculate LC resonance is F = 1\/2\u03c0\u221aLC.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The output square wave is approximately 41.4KHz.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Calculate values for the LC network where the resonant frequency is just about 41.2KHz, with the values of 470\u03bcH for the inductor and 1\u03bcF for the capacitor.<\/li><\/ol><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>By placing an LC resonant circuit at the output of the square wave, we can convert it into a sine wave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to test your DIY function generator, you can use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.circuitspecialists.com\/hantek2d72_70mhz_oscilloscope.html\">Hantek 2D72 Handheld Oscilloscope<\/a> to compare your results. When resonance is achieved through an LC circuit, the output signal will be a sine wave, because a sine wave represents resonance.
