What are Banana Plugs?

A banana plug is a type of spring-loaded, single-wire connector used for joining wires to test equipment, circuit boards, protoboards, and other devices. Banana plugs refer to the male banana connector, which plugs into the socket of a female banana connector (also known as a banana socket or banana jack).

The name “banana” comes from the appearance of the banana plug, which has a cylindrical prong that bulges out and curves, resembling a banana peel. The leaf-like protrusions on the banana plug are not just for show; they create tension when plugged into a banana socket. This tension ensures a snug, secure connection, eliminating the need for screws or other fastening devices.

Standard banana plugs have a diameter of 4 mm. You can find banana connectors in other sizes, like 2mm miniature banana plugs, but these are less common.
